class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Sika.

When multiple apartment building roofs in New York needed replacing, this system came in handy.

The Southridge Co-op Section #2 in Queens, New York was in desperate need of a complete roof makeover. When it came time to replace the 54,000 square feet of existing roof, contractor Exo Industries chose a Sikalastic Roofpro® system with Sika VIP (Vacuum Insulated Panel) Insulation to get the job done right. Sika VIP Vacuum Insulated Panel

The Sika VIP insulation is a revolutionary high-performance roof insulation that achieves a minimal R-value of 50 in an ultra-thin 1.5” profile. The VIP insulation is a composite panel high R-value core insulation protected on both sides with ¼” high-density cover boards that come prelaminated from the factory. The thickness of the VIP can be increased to achieve R values of 75 and beyond.

Scope of restoration

The existing older roof systems had minimal insulation and were in need of replacement. The existing roof decks consisted of sloped wood planks. Roof replacement was first evaluated using conventional polyisocyanurate roof insulation. Due to the thickness of the insulation needed to meet the current energy code it was determined that there was insufficient parapet and through wall flashing height as well as low bulkhead door thresholds.

The costs associated with modifying the building to accommodate the new roofing system thickness using conventional polyisocyanurate insulation were determined to exceed the cost of utilizing the Sika VIP insulation. Not only would the use of the Sika VIP insulation avoid costly alterations and increase the overall R value of the roof system, it would also reduce the overall project duration and minimize disruptions to the building.

By using the Sika VIP insulation, the project remained just a roof replacement project, not a roofing and masonry project, and eliminated the potential need for sidewalk shedding that would have been required as part of the masonry work. The existing roofs were removed down to the sloped wood deck. A new Sikalastic RoofPro system featuring Sika VIP insulation was installed in a fully adhered conventional roof assembly system.

Conclusion

The Sikalastic RoofPro® system featuring Sika VIP insulation reduced the overall thickness of the roof system. This eliminated the need for building alterations and reduced the construction cost and schedule while increasing the overall R value and thermal performance of the building.

A 20-year, Single Source, NDL, full system warranty inclusive of all the roofing system components was provided to the Building Owner to ensure the long-term performance of the new roofing system.

How Transportation is Factoring into Material Shortages

Meta Team examines how long lead times are factoring into the material shortages.

The material shortages felt by the roofing industry are indicative of multiple factors. That is why Meta Team has done the research, looking into all of the reasons why these shortages are happening. In this article, Meta Team takes a closer look at transportation issues as a possible explanation for the shortage.

As contractors are well aware, 2021 was characterized by long lead times for everything. Port backlogs, truck driver shortages, global deficit in shipping containers and more have all contributed to a transportation crisis on top of material shortages.

Goldman Sachs estimated that $24B worth of goods are parked outside of California ports along. Ocean shipped goods have been parked at ports in the US at an alarming rate. The current administration has focused on keeping one port open for 24 hours to begin to relieve the issue. That does not address moving the containers offloaded at ports.

In November of 2021, 80,000 containers were sitting at the port of Savannah and another twenty-five ships were parked waiting for offload. These containers are ultimately moved by truck. This dovetails into the truck driver shortage.

According to the American Trucking Association, “ATA estimates that over the next decade, the industry will have to recruit nearly 1,000,000 new drivers into the industry to replace retiring drivers, drivers that leave voluntarily (e.g., lifestyle) or involuntarily (e.g., driving records or failed drug test), as well as additional drivers needed for industry growth. These trends do not account for the impact of potential laws that may either alter the industry dynamics positively (e.g., lower the minimum age to drive across state lines) or negatively (e.g., regulatory mandates that push drivers to exit the industry or be less efficient).”

The transportation crisis is further exacerbated by a lack of shipping containers. According to Bill Bellico of Sika, “There are not enough intermodal containers available to service the volume of goods to be shipped. Multiple factors have driven this situation including increased demand of consumer products during Covid-19, out of balance trade routes and inability of manufacturers to produce new units.”

These factors not only have caused great delays but also increased costs. According to Construction Dive, the percent price change for non-residential construction services jumped the most in the area of truck and transportation of freight.

Roofing Goes Green

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

Learn about the companies that are driving the industry towards a greener future.

It is no secret that now more than ever is the time to focus on greener roofing solutions and for companies to reduce CO2 emissions. As manufacturers innovate to provide products that work longer and use greener practices, consumers and contractors alike can do their part to make sustainable choices. We have rounded up some pioneering companies that are driving the industry towards a more sustainable future.

Re-use and recycle

Environmentally responsible materials are more popular than ever, which is why an endlessly recyclable metal that won’t lose its strength and durability is a key component in EXCEPTIONAL® Metals’ pledge to reduce their environmental impact.

Malarkey adds upcycled rubber and plastic polymers from used tires and water bottles to help extend shingle life. The upcycled materials improve the shingle's resilience and strength, creating an incredibly durable material that will last through extreme weather conditions like intense wind, rain and impact.

Often on a roof made of a thousand pieces of tile, there are only a few broken tiles. Rather than reroofing, which comes at a substantial environmental cost, All Points Tile & Slate makes it easy to simply replace the few bits of damaged tile. Completely re-doing a roof creates harmful emissions during production while unnecessarily filling landfills. This is why All Points Tile is driven to provide local, national and international customers with the ability to identify, procure, color-match, store and deliver tiles. These processes make fixing a roof and replacing tiles much greener, while also making it easier for contractors to quickly finish the job and deliver a beautiful roof.

Certifiably sustainable

Sika strives to be transparent about their products from a full life cycle “cradle to grave” point of view. As such, Sika products are certified sustainable and designed to meet LEED standards in order to build a brighter future for our environment.

Sika has been publishing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its products since 2012 and its extensive EPD portfolio covers all of its construction target markets, from roof to basement. The only liquid-applied roofing and waterproofing systems that offer a fully disclosed cradle-to-grave EPD are Sikalastic RoofPro products.

Duro-Last, Inc. is the first manufacturer to publish a product specific PVC environmental product declaration (EPD) for single-ply membranes, reporting the lifecycle environmental impact of each of their membrane products. Duro-Last also leads the roofing industry with the most certifications under NSF/ANSI 347, and is one of the only two manufacturers to achieve the highest-level platinum certification.

Green technology

Malarkey is committed to the environment and developed the industry’s first smog-reducing shingle by incorporating 3M smog-reducing granules. These granules are used in all of Malarkey’s shingles. You won’t even be able to tell the granules are there because they blend into the shingle’s color.

Another way to reduce smog and the Urban Heat Island effect is through the use of green roofs. SOPREMA makes it easy to incorporate vegetated roofing systems into any roofing business with SOPRANATURE® green roof, which uses natural vegetation, like grasses and shrubs, to turn the roof, a usually neglected space, into a green oasis.

The roof layers act as a soil and drainage system, compensating for the hampered ecosystems resulting from urban development, offering a multitude of economic and environmental benefits to building owners and communities.

In addition to their innovative green roofing solutions, SOPREMA is deeply engaged in developing sustainability initiatives within their communities. For instance, they have a company recycling program and employees who have worked at SOPREMA for 20 years get a tree planted on the property in their name.

Energy efficiency

Western Colloid's Cool Roof Systems can make a huge difference in the heating and cooling costs of your building, specifically with Fluid Applied Reinforced Roofing (FARR) systems. The cost of upgrading or restoring your roof with this system is offset by the cost savings for your building. Additionally, your roof upgrade may qualify for government rebates, tax deductions or write-offs.

Similarly, ATAS has a variety of cool roof products designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat, bringing a new definition of “cool” to sustainability by bringing down the temperature.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the ways that the roofing industry is working towards ensuring a brighter, cleaner and certifiably greener future. Roofing products that extend the life of the roof, promote efficiency and save materials from landfills are smart choices for contractors and homeowners and show just how much you care about our planet and making sustainable choices to preserve it.

How several buildings in San Francisco rehabilitated their roofs with this coating.

When a municipality near San Francisco needed multiple roof upgrades, several Sika products were used in the process. The large projects required an economical re-coat of multiple asphalt roofs using a product that was easy to apply and highly durable. Thanks to Sika, the municipality avoided having to spend a lot of money to replace their roofs.

Beginning in the fall of 2019, installation of the Sikalastic 500 silicone-based roof coating began on the clubhouse roof of the local golf course. A successful result on this highly valued property has since led to installations on two warehouse structures at the city’s maintenance yard, the most recent of which was completed in November 2019.

With the availability of multiple primers, sealants, and accessory items to address nearly any sound substrate and warranty programs with terms up to 20 years, Sika provides a complete solution, not just a coating. class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Leading PVC roofing and waterproofing membrane celebrates its diamond anniversary.

Sika Sarnafil, the worldwide market leader in PVC Roofing and waterproofing membranes, is excited to announce that our flagship Sarnafil branded membrane has hit a record breaking 60 years of proven performance!

In 1958, a company called Sarna was formed in Switzerland to develop polymeric products, and in 1962 this small company did something very big. Company chemists developed the first PVC membrane reinforced with fabric, leading to a number of industrial applications that included a growing roofing and waterproofing membrane market. This tear-resistant PVC membrane was patented and trademarked “Sarnafil.” The discovery would revolutionize the single-ply roofing industry forever.

Since 1962, Sarnafil® membranes have evolved from humble beginnings into the worldwide leader in roofing and waterproofing membranes known for performance, innovation, sustainability and resiliency. A sixty-year history has documented that Sarnafil membranes have outperformed the industry standard on buildings of all types and in any climate imaginable.

“60 years ago, we started with one mission in mind, to produce the industry’s longest lasting, most resilient PVC roofing and waterproofing membrane around,” says Sebastien Godard, executive vice president of Sika Sarnafil USA, “and today that mission is stronger than ever! The Sarnafil brand is synonymous with performance in the commercial construction industry. We have customers who after 40 years of installing Sarnafil still won’t install anything else. That speaks volumes.”

What is the secret to being the industry leader for the last 60 years? How about roofs that perform for 30+ years for starters! That is what happens when you combine proven materials, unmatched technical expertise and the best approved installers of any manufacturer. “And let’s not forget our customers!”, exclaims Bill Bellico, vice president of marketing and inside sales for Sika Sarnafil USA. “We really owe all of our success to the many approved applicators, roof consultants, architects, general contractors and building owners who have not only supported Sika Sarnafil and Sarnafil Systems but also helped elevate roofing systems as a whole from a commodity product to being viewed as the first line of defense in protecting your building”.

With more than 60 years of roofing and waterproofing experience, the longest track record of any PVC membrane manufacturer in the world, no one has more experience in protecting your building. As we celebrate this incredible milestone for Sarnafil we want to also make a promise to those who have stood by us over the decades. For the next 60 years we promise to continue putting our customers’ needs first, find ways to make our products and systems more sustainable and develop innovative solutions that make installations faster, easier and more affordable. Thanks for helping us make the last 60 years great. We look forward to working with you for another 60 and beyond!

International Roofing Expo (IRE), Informa Markets' premier roofing and exteriors event serving the roofing industry, concluded its 67th annual event held earlier last month, February 1-3, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. With 10,002 registered professionals, the annual event connected notable and emergent brands with thousands of buyers, while providing ample networking opportunities and a full range of education led by renowned industry experts.

The 2022 edition of the International Roofing Expo took over 142,483 NSF of the award-winning Convention Center, hosting nearly 400 industry-leading suppliers in the expo hall; thus, offering attendees access to a wide variety of products and activations from the world’s largest suppliers and manufacturers to specialized SMBs with specific services. Manufacturers and suppliers showcased the latest products, services, and technology for the roofing and exterior industries, including notable companies such as ABC Supply Co. Inc., Beacon Building Products GAF/Siplast, SRS Distribution, Beacon Building Products, Owens Corning and more.

“The International Roofing Expo was an amazing and productive experience for both attendees and exhibitors, serving as the industry’s leading platform driving company growth and enabling collaboration within the roofing industry,” said Lauren Lamb, vice president of strategy, marketing and conference at International Roofing Expo, organized by Informa Markets. “Every year, brands exhibit at our event to make new deals and re-establish connection with existing partners – and this year was no different. The expo floor was electric with buyers perusing new brands and products, and conference rooms were packed as professionals sought out solutions to today’s challenges. We were thrilled to be able to return to a larger format, while still holding onto the intimate feel of last year’s event.”

In addition to an expansive expo floor, registered participants had the opportunity to engage with world-class education made available at the event. The event’s educational programs served as inclusive and productive sessions that allowed for connections in specific groups, such as the National Women in Roofing conference, as well as the SRS Para Latino Lounge on the show floor that offered custom-tailored educational and networking opportunities for Latinos in the roofing industry.

National Women in Roofing (NWiR) hosted their 5th annual NWiR Day conference on January 30 in conjunction with the IRE. Multidisciplinary women professionals in the roofing industry get together at the event to learn about the latest business tactics and strategies and to share their business secrets. They announced their new DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) education program called REAL Roofing at the event.

The Roofing Alliance hosted its eighth Construction Management Student Competition this year at IRE. The five finalist teams presented on Wednesday, February 2 at the International Roofing Expo as the final stage of the competition. The Roofing Alliance is proud to announce Texas A&M University as the winning school and Allie Stark from Clemson University as the Best Individual Presenter. Winners were announced at the Cocktail Reception and Awards Ceremony held on Wednesday, February 2, including Kyler Hardison (team captain), Blake Bocchino, Kyle Cahill, Canyon Martine and Alexia Palomares (team alternate).

In support of the local community, each year, IRE partners with Rebuilding Together to make critical home repairs for those in need. On January 31, 56 volunteers gathered for the 13th Annual Community Service Day Project to rebuild the homes of those who were severely damaged in Hurricane Ida. As a result, there were considerable donations made, including a $10,000 donation from IRE, $15,000 from Sika Sarnafil, the primary sponsor, and a running total of $2,497 from IRE attendees and exhibitors. Other sponsors of the community service day included Carlisle Construction Materials, CentiMark, Damato Enterprises, GAF, ICP Building Solutions Group, and OMG Roofing Products, along with a special additional donation from GAF of 50 roofs to Rebuilding Together New Orleans.
