Highlights from the 2021 Q4 survey on reroofing market trends indicate expansion and optimism in the industry.

The Q4 results of the Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing are finally here! Roofing contractors and consultants gave their thoughts on the state of the reroofing market. For this survey, 73% of respondents were roofing contractors and 27% were consultants. In terms of market type, 88% of respondents stated that their business was low slope or a combination of low and steep slope and 12% reported they only work in steep slope.

In this year's survey, the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) introduced two new features: the Project Contracts Index and the Customer Inquiries Index. The intent of these indexes is to provide members of the reroofing industry a number that can help them better understand the state of the market.

The Customer Inquiries Index is based on a scale of 0-100. Any score above 50 indicates optimism or expansion and anything below 50 indicates pessimism or contraction. For Q4, the index number was 63.8 compared to 62.2 for Q3.

The Project Contracts Index is based on this same scale and for Q4, the number was 61.1. Q3 had an index number of 59.4, so this is quite the increase! In terms of project backlog, 51% of respondents reported a backlog of three months or more as of January 2022.

49% of respondents reported that the number of project contracts increased for Q4, with 33% reporting no change and 22% reporting a decrease. For customer inquiries, 49% reported that inquiries increased, with 31% reporting no change and 21% reporting a decrease.

Interested contractors and consultants who want to participate in next quarter’s brief survey can sign up for a notification.

On Season 3, Episode 3 of Coffee Conversations, sponsored by Johns Manville, RoofersCoffeeShop® partner Heidi J. Ellsworth is joined by industry leaders across the industry for an in-depth look at 2021’s third quarter.

CEOs and executives Adam Oaks of Estimating Edge, Deryl Kratzer from National Roofing Partners, Will Lorenz of General Coatings and Jennifer Ford-Smith of Johns Manville all give the inside perspective on the industry at current and predictions into the future.

Amid a pandemic with a light at the end of a dark tunnel, the conversation begins with good news, data tells us bids are on the rise and the industry is predicting a strong third quarter.

Director of Product Management Marketing at Johns Manville Jennifer Ford-Smith says, “We see a very strong Q3 and we are seeing strong growth well into 2022 based on what our contractors are telling us.”

“It's always surprising to see the bids keep going up with all the economic fluctuations that are happening, but this is normalized data, and this is specific commercial roofing bids,” adds Adam Oaks, CEO of Estimating Edge.

Vice President at General Coatings and a President of the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association Will Lorenz adds, “Everything is strong on demand. I think that's the great news for all of us. I think the challenge is that demand continues to outs strip supply.”

The panel addresses the challenges of the supply shortages and how they expect it will affect the third quarter. Deryl Kratzer with National Roofing Partners highlights how despite the obstacle of supply shortages, the industry remains resilient.

“Partners are actually collaborating together and being able to come up with solutions is something I've never seen it in years in the industry. So, it's pretty exciting to see competitors even helping each other to make sure that we're able to get the supply that we need.”

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Roofing coalition launches large scale survey of industry.

A leading coalition of roofing associations is launching a second annual series of Quarterly Market Index Surveys, designed to provide a barometer of the industry’s business conditions. The one-of-a-kind poll follows a successful effort late last year and early this year, drawing on the views of contractors and roof consultants who are then provided with exclusive access to the results. Roofing professionals can participate in the Survey for Reroofing at http://bit.ly/roofindexsurvey and submit responses from Monday, October 4 through Wednesday, October 15.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone in the roofing business to contribute to our knowledge about the industry, and to have access to that knowledge once the survey is complete,” said Ellen Thorp, Executive Director of National Women in Roofing, speaking on behalf of the coalition. “We encourage all of our roofing contractor and roof consultant colleagues to participate. The more responses, the better the results, the more we will all learn.”

This year’s survey launch builds on the momentum of the coalition’s initial effort that measured perceptions of business activity in 2021 Q2. More than 300 respondents completed the eight-question survey during a two-week period this past July. Two-thirds (67%) of the responses came from roofing contractors and one-third (33%) were submitted by roof consultants. The results indicated that despite the Covid-19 pandemic and material and labor shortages, opportunities in the reroofing industry have improved or held steady when compared with business in the same quarter of 2020.

The survey is an industry-wide effort to collect information about the reroofing market spearheaded by a coalition of trade associations, including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Chemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc., EPDM Roofing Association, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, Metal Construction Association, National Roofing Contractors Association, National Women in Roofing, Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.

Roofing professionals are invited to join industry trade associations representing contractors, consultants and manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada in taking part in the new Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing.

The purpose of the survey is to take the pulse of the reroofing industry on a quarterly basis and become a regular barometer of the industry’s business conditions. By asking a handful of business questions and measuring responses across a number of demographics, the survey helps give an indication of the reroofing market strength and trajectory.

During the previous survey timeframe that measured perceptions of business activity in 2021 Q1, nearly 300 respondents completed the eight-question survey during a two-week period in April with 62% of responses coming from roofing contractors and 38% coming from roof consultants. The results indicate generally improving market conditions for the roofing industry in the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey is an industry-wide effort to collect information about the reroofing market spearheaded by a coalition of trade associations, including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Chemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc., EPDM Roofing Association, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, Metal Construction Association, National Roofing Contractors Association, National Women in Roofing, Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.
