The JM Texas plant decided to help out their local community with generous holiday donations. 

At Johns Manville, we always want to make a meaningful connection with the communities we serve. That’s why this last holiday season, our new plant in Hillsboro, Texas donated toys and jackets to the Optimist Club. This organization provides financial support and active programs to youths in the local community. And every year they provide clothes and other gifts to children in need in the Hillsboro area. Last December, our employees bought over $500 worth of clothes for the organization. 

The team knew that taking in their donations was just the first step of helping the Optimist Club and their efforts to bring joy to children in the community. On Monday, December 13, 2021, our whole production team and our Production Supervisor Brian Girard, arrived to help the Optimist Club wrap all the donations they received.

Our JM team was featured in the local newspaper as the largest group to volunteer to wrap the donations. This event has really inspired the team at Hillsboro who can’t wait to look for more opportunities like this one to make a difference in their local community.   

In addition to Hillsboro, our plant in Scottsboro, Alabama worked with a local high school that needed food and hygiene products for several students. The team hosted a donation drive to collect several items that were later delivered to the high school.

In honor of Women's History Month, we celebrate some women-led businesses in the roofing.

Roofing is an overwhelmingly male occupation. Whether contractor or crew, the majority of workers are typically men. The U.S. Department of Labor considers roofing a male-dominated profession, but that doesn’t mean women in roofing are unicorns. Take Marianne Sumter, owner of Wil-Mar Products, as proof of how women are not only present in the roofing industry, but are essential to its success.  

With a desire to continue her husband’s legacy, Marianne became the owner of Wil-Mar Products, stepping into a leadership role in a male-dominated industry. And she has successfully led the company with strength and expertise. To this day, Marianne continues to provide excellent customer service, meet the demands of the industry and develop lasting relationships with women. 

And there are even more stories of women revolutionizing the roofing industry. Women now fill positions ranging from roofing, marketing and sales to consulting, manufacturing and research. Female professionals are also stepping into leadership roles at roofing manufacturing companies and starting their own roofing companies. Read on as we highlight women leading the roofing industry! 

Ethelmae Humphreys has been a trailblazer for women in roofing since the 1940s. She had just graduated from high school in 1944 and her parents moved to Joplin, Missouri to start TAMKO Building Products. Ethelmae headed to college at the University of Kansas, earning a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. Upon graduation it became clear that her father’s failing health meant he would need assistance running the company, so she came home and helped out, and was named the executive vice president of TAMKO. Together with her husband, she grew the company into one of the largest privately owned roofing manufacturers in the country. After her husband’s death in 1993, she took over as CEO until her son took on the role of president and CEO the following year. 

Associations 

Plenty of roofing associations pride themselves on being women-led or having women in high-ranking positions. The Roofing Alliance, celebrating 25 years as the foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), has appointed Alison LaValley as the new executive director and recently has made Kelly Van Winkle the first female vice president. 

Additionally, Lisa Pate serves as the executive director of the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (FRSA), Tracey Prociw is the executive director and board secretary of The Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW) and Suzie Boyd is the current president of the Colorado Roofing Association (CRA). With female leadership, these associations have prospered and grown; these women have paved the path to a better roofing industry.  

Plus, there are plenty of women in roofing who hold leadership positions. Johns Manville is proudly led by a team of women who represent their Roofing Systems Leadership, including: Director of Human Resources Brandi Duncan, Director of Product Management and Marketing Jennifer Ford-Smith, Owner Services Leader Mandy Schweitzer, Director of Commercial Services and SIOP Tesha Kroll and Director of Technology Zebonie Sukle. 

Many women have started their own businesses in the industry too. Art Unlimited is a women-owned business, with the second-generation leadership of Anna Anderson and Elizabeth Chapman taking the company’s digital and marketing expertise to a national stage. 

RoofersCoffeeShop® is women owned and led too! Established in 2002 by Vickie Sharples, the Coffee Shop is “where the industry meets.” Heidi J. Ellsworth became a partner in the company with Vickie in 2015 and today the RCS crew is led by Heidi, who also has her own marketing and consulting business, HJE Consulting.  

RCS COO Karen L. Edwards has helped Heidi grow the website and push boundaries in this male-dominated industry that is slow to change. She is also the Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3)’s communications and engagement leader and owns her own marketing and sales company, Casimir Group. Studies show that women who support other women are more successful. Research conducted by Harvard Business Review found that having a network of close female contacts helps females land executive positions.  

According to Forbes, these inner circles provide necessary support and recommendations when their peers are faced with challenges and cultural bias, especially in male-dominated industries like roofing. As the president of RoofersCoffeeShop, Heidi has exceled in empowering other women to be successful within the roofing industry, fostering employees at all levels within the company to build a strong network that is both diverse and supportive of all people, brining then into the trades for an opportunity of a great career. 

Furthermore, organizations like National Women in Roofing, of which Heidi is a founder, are providing opportunities and support for women in the roofing industry. Today, with the efforts of many in the roofing industry, NWIR has created a new understanding, interest and demand for diversity. Women are more prevalent than ever in the field and at trade shows, meetings and board meetings. Through mentoring, education and networking, women have more support than ever to find a rewarding career in this industry.   

There is more than enough space on the roof for women in this industry. With so many female role models and female-led roofing initiatives, the future of roofing looks female!

The North / East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA) is set to host its 94th annual trade show.  

This year’s North / East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA) Convention and Trade Show is expected to have a great turnout. The event is set to take place March 1 – 3 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Although the deadline for registration has passed, we are currently offering a free pass that contractors can use at the door to attend the event. 

With nearly 200 booths and quality educational seminars, this convention is great event for contractors in the northeastern United States to attend. See the progress of our new Hillsboro, Texas plant and learn about the recruiting efforts to build our team. 

Construction of Johns Manville’s new 420,000 sq ft Polyiso plant and distribution center in Hillsboro, Texas is nearing completion! While the checklist to completion is still in progress, there are a few key milestones to celebrate as we inch closer to the official opening in the first quarter of 2022. Some additional accomplishments so far: Plant Manager, Josh Canada and team are working to hire a complete staff, the plant’s official Certificate of Occupancy is in place, and product has started arriving to stock the distribution center, which is the first operational portion of the building officially opened in December 2021. 

JM values employees and the communities they live and work in and we are honored to invest in the town Hillsboro, bringing 50 new jobs to the local economy and looking forward to long-term growth in the roofing industry. The town of Hillsboro and the Hillsboro Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) recently celebrated a first-time award in it’s nearly 30-year history, they received the Community Economic Development Award (CEDA), presented by the Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC). With this momentum, JM is excited to continue the hiring process and complete the much anticipate new team in Hillsboro.  

Meet a Few of JM’s new team members: 

Johns Manville is excited to welcome its newest Team Members to the Hillsboro Team. 

  • Melissa Ritchie. Melissa comes to JM from PepsiCo and will be the plant EH&S Specialist, she brings to the team lots of knowledge and expertise. 

  • Susana Perez. Susana comes to JM from Tractor Supply DC, where she was the HR Coordinator. She will be the HR Representative; she brings new ideas and new perspectives on recruiting strategies. 

  • Dominick Phillips. Dominick has been with JM since 2017 as a Process Engineer in our Scottsboro, Alabama Plant and was promoted to Plant Engineer in 2019. 

  • Brad Smiley. Brad joined JM in 1999 and has held various positions at our plant in McPherson, KS. He has been located at our Cleburne, Texas distribution center since 2014 as Warehouse Supervisor and DC Manager in Grand Prairie since 2016. 

  • Ray Mohaimani. Ray will be joining our JM family this month, as our Process Engineer. Ray brings five years of Process Engineering and Operations Leadership along with a strong background in Chemical Engineering. 

JM is thrilled to invest in the town of Hillsboro, Texas and offer an economical benefit of the plant being a short distance to the largest consolidation of roofing contractors in the nation, located in the Southwest region. We have transitioned material to the new Hillsboro distribution center and have officially opened for outbound shipments and customer pick-ups as of December 2021.

For 20 years, RoofersCoffeeShop® has been and continues to be Where the Industry Meets! 

We’re going platinum in 2022!  What started as Roofers Exchange, a newspaper focused on classified ads, is now RoofersCoffeeShop, a fully digital community known as the place Where the Industry Meets. For 20 years, RCS has served as a digital space for contractors to meet fellow roofing professionals to exchange advice, tell stories and talk business, much like the coffee shops and diners contractors would visit early in the morning in the past before starting their work day. By naming the website RoofersCoffeeShop, it gives the roofing community a sense of past comfort and a doorway into new technologies that are essential to a strong business in today’s world. 

Vickie Sharples started Roofers Exchange and had a vision for its future, which was online.  In 2000 she approached Heidi J. Ellsworth asking for help with a new name and a digital approach. Heidi wondered, “How are we going to get roofing contractors, who at that point in 2000, not very many of them were online, a lot of them didn’t have a computer on their desk.”  Her father, a general contractor in Central Oregon, was the inspiration for the new name, RoofersCoffeeShop, which launched officially in 2002.   

Heidi’s father worked all over Eastern Oregon and when he would get into a new town he’d visit the local coffee shop, which always had pickup trucks out in front of it because that’s where local contractors, tradesmen and women would show up in the morning to talk. She explains, “They would find out where the best products are, what jobs were going on, what kind of labor there was, get directions, but it was their place to get knowledge.”  With this in mind, Heidi and Vickie knew they needed to make it comfortable for contractors online.    

“It’s really about where the industry meets. RoofersCoffeeShop is the spot where contractors, or any roofing professional, can come anytime, 24/7, to find what they need,” Heidi continues. Jennifer Stone, preferred accounts with Johns Manville and past executive chair for National Women in Roofing (NWIR), echoes that statement, “You support the industry so deeply. You truly are a place where everyone can come, everyone can collaborate, everyone is welcome.” 

Greg Hlavaty, CEO of Western Colloid, expresses, “It’s turned into a great asset for the roofing industry and I’m proud to have been a part of it for the entire time they’ve been around.” Now the Coffee Shop is breaking new ground in digital marketing for the roofing industry. It has become a community of roofing professionals who share ideas, tell stories, conduct research, sell items and read news about the industry.

This year’s International Roofing Expo (IRE) promises many exciting events, products, classes and more. The expo will take place February 1-3 in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

FlashCo recently announced the hiring of Robbie Boland for the position of Sales Representative for the Southeast region.

Robbie brings to FlashCo over 35 years of experience in the roofing and construction industries. Most recently, he was the Owner of Development Enterprise, LLC, a roofing repair and maintenance company based in Columbia, South Carolina. In addition, Robbie has held sales and management positions with Johns Manville, Lloyd Roofing Company, Inc, Design-Build Solutions and Boral Industries. Robbie is a top performer and seasoned professional in the roofing and building envelope market with experience in sales, management, operations and business development.

Robbie will be responsible for continuing the development of FlashCo’s Southeast region that includes North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. “We’re very happy to add Robbie to our sales team,” says Rick Santolaya, National Sales Manager. “He’s been working extensively in the region and really knows the industry. With his background, he’ll be able to hit the ground running working with the contractors, distributors and FlashCo partners in the area.”

At Development Enterprise, LLC, Robbie managed sales growth and development for the company specializing in low slope and steep slope roofing service and repair. The company also provided rooftop mechanical installations including deck preparation. With Johns Manville, Robbie was the District Sales and Marketing Manager for the Southeast/Carolinas territory. He was responsible for growing revenue and increasing the company’s market share over a six-year period. Robbie focused on sales to large auto manufacturing companies in the region and building relationships with major accounts in both the public and private sector.

“Justin Erickson did a great job developing and growing this market,” says Bill Bartell, vice president of sales and marketing. “With Justin’s move to the new role of Strategic Account Specialist, we are pleased to have Robbie take over the sales territory. Since FlashCo expanded to this region, Justin has done a great job of building trust among our customers and partners.
