Four trailblazing women in roofing discuss the legacy of women in the industry and the push for inclusion.

In a recent Coffee Conversations, RoofersCoffeeShop® highlighted the voices of four very important women working in the roofing industry today. RCS President Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke with our COO Karen Edwards, Kaci Atherton from McPartlon Roofing, Mackenzie Beldon from Beldon Roofing and LeeAnn Slattery from ATAS International about their amazing work in roofing. They also discuss the ways they are recruiting more young women into the industry.

Kaci started in the medical industry, but after feeling burnt out, she turned to working in the roofing industry. Now, she works as a service coordinator for McPartlon Roofing and loves the support she’s received from the roofing community, particularly the women she’s met through National Women in Roofing (NWIR).

“I was looking for something new,” Kaci said. “I happened upon my current boss, Hillary McPartlon. I was just so attracted to her vision for inclusivity of gender in this industry and her high standards for workplace culture.”

Karen has been working in the roofing industry for years and has an impressive background. Not only is she the COO here at RCS, but she also has her own consulting business, Casimir Group. Her journey in the roofing industry and adapting to this male-dominated industry was not an easy one. “I'm 5'8". I wore couple inch heels too because I wanted to look men in the eye or look down on them, and I used that to my advantage quite often,” she said. “There are things that you shouldn't even have to do, but you do.”

Although Mackenzie was encouraged to join her family’s roofing business by her father, she attributes the success of their company to the matriarchs of the family. “My great-grandmother, Ann Beldon, started the business with my great-grandfather, Morry Beldon,” she said. “She actually was very involved in the day-to-day. She did not have a college degree, but the business was successful because of how she ran it.”

LeeAnn’s background was in wall panel manufacturing before she moved into the roofing industry. While she was nervous at first about entering the industry with minimal knowledge, she found that her coworkers at ATAS International were still very supportive. She wants young people interested in joining the industry to learn from her experience of being inexperienced.

“I was so concerned about (my lack of experience), and they were not at all concerned,” she said. “That's what I would like to tell the younger people as well, to not let something like that sway you from applying for a job because what you think might be a big deal, really might not.”

Listen to the entire Coffee Conversations to hear more from these incredible women about their experiences in roofing and their collective push for inclusivity in the industry.

            alt='ATAS New Plate System'
            title='ATAS New Plate System'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

ATAS International has added Omawall PL with EVO™, a new aluminum plate system, which joins their ever-expanding concealed fastener wall panel product offering.

Omawall PL with EVO™ is an architectural plate panel, manufactured in .10 thick aluminum, is a great choice for high-end applications and is made fully of non-combustible materials. EVO™ is a patented panel extrusion attachment developed by Carter Architectural. Panels are prefabricated and field-cut, saving on installation time and costs by avoiding field-fabrication. It installs quickly and easily in horizontal or vertical orientation with a dry joint design incorporating metal splines to create the reveal appearance.

The standard module sizes are 26” x 26” and 16” x 96”, however, custom sizes are available. The depth of the panel is 1-3/4” and the reveal measures 9/16”. This panel is ideal for all types of commercial, educational and healthcare buildings, as well as multi-family residential and mixed-use buildings. Omawall PL is available in over 40 standard colors, including the new series of matte colors and in custom colors. For small orders, ATAS has the capability of post-painting the panels at a cost far less than prepainting an entire coil, which ensures meeting a building’s design intent without breaking the budget.

This new panel is AAMA 508-07 compliant, which is a voluntary test method and specification for pressure equalized rainscreen wall cladding. It has successfully undergone other performance testing, including AAMA 501.1-15 (dynamic), ASTM E1233 (modified), ASTM E283, ASTM E330 and ASTM E331.

Omawall PL has been fully tested in an NFPA 285 test assembly. Fire safety is of great concern to building owners and municipalities, particularly due to high-rise construction and close proximity of buildings within cities. Using this plate system as part of a wall assembly will assist with fire spreading concerns in drained/back ventilated rainscreen designs.

Jim Bush, vice president of sales and marketing, stated, “ATAS has long offered a wide variety of wall panel options, including single skin concealed and exposed fastener panels, metal composite material (MCM) panels, and insulated metal panels (IMPs). By adding Omawall PL, it further expands the choices of wall cladding, and can be incorporated into a building’s façade along with many of our other products. ATAS’ color consistency and product quality will contribute to the overall aesthetics and performance long into the life of the building.”

Roofing Goes Green

roofing-goes-green-2

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

Learn about the companies that are driving the industry towards a greener future.

It is no secret that now more than ever is the time to focus on greener roofing solutions and for companies to reduce CO2 emissions. As manufacturers innovate to provide products that work longer and use greener practices, consumers and contractors alike can do their part to make sustainable choices. We have rounded up some pioneering companies that are driving the industry towards a more sustainable future.

Re-use and recycle

Environmentally responsible materials are more popular than ever, which is why an endlessly recyclable metal that won’t lose its strength and durability is a key component in EXCEPTIONAL® Metals’ pledge to reduce their environmental impact.

Malarkey adds upcycled rubber and plastic polymers from used tires and water bottles to help extend shingle life. The upcycled materials improve the shingle's resilience and strength, creating an incredibly durable material that will last through extreme weather conditions like intense wind, rain and impact.

Often on a roof made of a thousand pieces of tile, there are only a few broken tiles. Rather than reroofing, which comes at a substantial environmental cost, All Points Tile & Slate makes it easy to simply replace the few bits of damaged tile. Completely re-doing a roof creates harmful emissions during production while unnecessarily filling landfills. This is why All Points Tile is driven to provide local, national and international customers with the ability to identify, procure, color-match, store and deliver tiles. These processes make fixing a roof and replacing tiles much greener, while also making it easier for contractors to quickly finish the job and deliver a beautiful roof.

Certifiably sustainable

Sika strives to be transparent about their products from a full life cycle “cradle to grave” point of view. As such, Sika products are certified sustainable and designed to meet LEED standards in order to build a brighter future for our environment.

Sika has been publishing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its products since 2012 and its extensive EPD portfolio covers all of its construction target markets, from roof to basement. The only liquid-applied roofing and waterproofing systems that offer a fully disclosed cradle-to-grave EPD are Sikalastic RoofPro products.

Duro-Last, Inc. is the first manufacturer to publish a product specific PVC environmental product declaration (EPD) for single-ply membranes, reporting the lifecycle environmental impact of each of their membrane products. Duro-Last also leads the roofing industry with the most certifications under NSF/ANSI 347, and is one of the only two manufacturers to achieve the highest-level platinum certification.

Green technology

Malarkey is committed to the environment and developed the industry’s first smog-reducing shingle by incorporating 3M smog-reducing granules. These granules are used in all of Malarkey’s shingles. You won’t even be able to tell the granules are there because they blend into the shingle’s color.

Another way to reduce smog and the Urban Heat Island effect is through the use of green roofs. SOPREMA makes it easy to incorporate vegetated roofing systems into any roofing business with SOPRANATURE® green roof, which uses natural vegetation, like grasses and shrubs, to turn the roof, a usually neglected space, into a green oasis.

The roof layers act as a soil and drainage system, compensating for the hampered ecosystems resulting from urban development, offering a multitude of economic and environmental benefits to building owners and communities.

In addition to their innovative green roofing solutions, SOPREMA is deeply engaged in developing sustainability initiatives within their communities. For instance, they have a company recycling program and employees who have worked at SOPREMA for 20 years get a tree planted on the property in their name.

Energy efficiency

Western Colloid's Cool Roof Systems can make a huge difference in the heating and cooling costs of your building, specifically with Fluid Applied Reinforced Roofing (FARR) systems. The cost of upgrading or restoring your roof with this system is offset by the cost savings for your building. Additionally, your roof upgrade may qualify for government rebates, tax deductions or write-offs.

Similarly, ATAS has a variety of cool roof products designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat, bringing a new definition of “cool” to sustainability by bringing down the temperature.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the ways that the roofing industry is working towards ensuring a brighter, cleaner and certifiably greener future. Roofing products that extend the life of the roof, promote efficiency and save materials from landfills are smart choices for contractors and homeowners and show just how much you care about our planet and making sustainable choices to preserve it.

Dale Nelson of Roof Hugger awarded Larry A. Swaney Award

RoofersCoffeeShop® (RCS) is proud to be a partner with the Metal Construction Association (MCA). During their 2022 winter meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, I was able to attend the meetings and learn more about the important initiatives of this association.

The mission of the Metal Construction Association is to promote the use of metal in the building envelope through marketing, education and action on public policies that affect metal's use. Under the leadership of current Chair James Bush of ATAS International, the association continues to work to not only promote the use of metal in building architecture but also strive to generate important technical information for the ongoing improvement of installation practices.

A highlight of the meeting was the awards program where several distinguished metal construction professionals were recognized. For the Larry A. Swaney Award it was incredibly exciting to see Dale Nelson of Roof Hugger receive this distinction. The award is entrusted to an individual who has worked unselfishly for the success of the association and the betterment of the metal construction industry as a whole. The recipient is recognized for reflecting the spirit of Larry A. Swaney, the founding president of the association and an individual committed to promoting communication, cooperation, sharing and unity, as well as fostering growth and enhancing the betterment of metal construction.

Also recognized was Miguel Pena of GSSI for the Patrick R. Bush Service Award. This award recognizes one individual from an MCA member company who has recently made significant volunteer contributions to the Metal Construction Association. Pena is the chair of the METALCON Liaison Committee, and worked endlessly with PSMJ, MCA’s partner for METALCON, to host a successful METALCON event last October. He was instrumental in executing the new METALCON Live monthly webinars. These webinars give people in the construction industry an opportunity to stay current with metal initiatives and to learn new techniques to ensure proper installation, and so much more.

With several councils and committees reporting during the meetings, it was obvious that there is an emphasis on sharing the benefits of sustainability, durability, performance and safety. There were reports from the Codes and Standards committee chaired by Andy Williams of Panel Cladding Solutions and Bob Zabcik of Z-tech Consulting, the Technical Committee chaired by David Stermer of Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation, the Market Development committee chaired by Lee Ann Slattery of ATAS and many more. All the committees are focused on providing information for the metal construction community around changing standards and ongoing metal success stories.

The MCA also hosts several councils and alliances during their meetings. Renee Ramsey, executive director of the Metal Roofing Alliance presented the market growth of residential metal roofing and the growth of roofing contractors. The current chair of the MRA is Dick Bus of ATAS and according to him, “The Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) is the leading voice for companies and professionals involved in the residential metal roofing industry. Since its inception in 1998, we have shown millions of people just how beautiful, durable and economical metal roofing can be.” With yearly studies and market analysis the MRA is showing that the growth of metal continues in double digits yearly.

Additional councils including the Accessories Council, Insulated Metal Panel (IMP) and Metal Composite Materials (MCM), Retrofit, Roofing Council and Single Skin Metal Wall Panel Councils and Alliances reported to the membership. Reports included technical updates, market development initiatives along with a variety of new projects underway that will continue to provide great value to those in the metal construction industry.

The MCA Winter and Summer Meetings are open to members and non-members. Attendance offers tremendous insights into everything about metal in construction. Save the date for the 2022 Summer Meeting is June 13-15, at the Hilton Rosemont/Chicago, 10 minutes from O’Hare International Airport. RoofersCoffeeShop will be there.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Typical applications for this panel include walls, fascia or equipment screens.

ATAS International has introduced a new profile to their Design Wall panel system. The new High Design Wall Flush V (DSV120) panel has been added to the existing series of four profile options.

The new High Design Wall Flush V (DSV120) panel is 1-3/4” deep and offers a distinctive vee-shaped profile. They are installed horizontally or vertically with a tongue and groove interlock and concealed fasteners. The maximum panel length for the new panel is 20’-0” and is available in the following materials and thicknesses:

•    Aluminum - .032, .040, and .050
•    Metallic Coated Steel – 24, 22*, and 20* gauge
•    Copper* – 16 and 20 oz. copper
*Subject to minimum quantities and extended lead time. Inquire for material and panel coverage availability.

Allowing for design creativity, Design Wall panels can be mixed and matched within their own series to achieve unique patterns across a façade, whether in the same color, or with complementary or contrasting colors. The aluminum panels can be perforated in any of our six standard patterns, or in a custom pattern. The perforated panels are ideal for numerous applications including architectural design, passive solar shading, ventilation, acoustical solutions and equipment screens. ATAS can color-match each side of a perforated panel for applications where both sides are visible. The aluminum substrate is ideal for outdoor perforated applications due to its inherent corrosion-resistant properties.

High Design Wall Flush V panels are manufactured in over 40 stock 70% PVDF finishes, Oxide Series and Woodland Series 70% PVDF print coats, as well as in Clear Satin and Dark Bronze anodized aluminum. Custom colors can be achieved on coil coated metal, dependent upon quantities. Post-painted options are offered for small quantities and in custom colors. Smooth and stucco embossed textures are available on the panels, along with a complete line of trims in matching colors, gauges, and finishes or as specified. The aesthetics of High Design Wall Flush V can be enhanced by using factory-fabricated Elite Series accessories, including Z Boxes, Snap J and H channels, closure angles, extrusions and mitered corners.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

In ATAS International’s annual project of the year competition, the Lot H Parking Garage in Wilmington, Delaware took first place in the accents category for 2020.

The architect for this project was Bernardon of Wilmington, Delaware, and the perforated metal panels were installed by A&H Metals, Inc. of Newark, Delaware.

Bernardon selected ATAS’ perforated Belvedere 7.2” Rib panels in Titanium colored .032 aluminum. The perforation pattern consists of 3/8” round holes with 1/2” staggered centers, and a 51% open area. A&H Metals assisted with the final details on how everything was going to be assembled with the perforated panels during construction.

Chris Milyo of A&H Metals stated,

“When you think of a parking garage, you’re probably thinking of a boring concrete structure. However, as you can see from the pictures, this parking garage looks and feels different. It has been fitted with not only ATAS perforated panels on custom galvanized frames, but also with ACM (aluminum composite material) panels and Greenscreens (welded-wire trellis system) in complex geometric configurations to add to its overall design. We are proud to have installed all these items. I would like to thank all the folks at ATAS, as this project was a team effort from budget, to build, to project award.”

Parking garages today are so much more than ugly grey structures. Perforated metal panels are available in a variety of profiles, colors and finishes. With the endless options of perforation patterns, shapes, and hole sizes, design aesthetics are unlimited, helping the garages to blend into the surrounding neighborhood, or stand out with bright, bold colors. These unique facades help to conceal cars yet allow for air flow required for parking garages. The perforated panels allow light into the garages during the day and block the car headlights at night.

Perforated metal wall panels are ideal for numerous applications, including architectural design, passive solar shading, ventilation, acoustical solutions, and equipment screens. ATAS offers six standard hole size patterns, as well as custom options to fit any project’s design needs. Additionally, ATAS can color-match each side of the panels for applications where both sides are visible. An aluminum substrate is ideal for outdoor perforated applications due to its inherent corrosion-resistant properties.

The first place ATAS International 2020 project of the year commercial roofs winner was awarded to the Riverview Branch Library in Riverview, Florida. Field-Lok standing seam metal roof panels manufactured by ATAS were installed on the new library. Standing seam metal roofing is a perfect choice for solar systems because of its long service life. A crystalline system is often warranted for 25 years of power generation, thus a roofing substrate is needed that has a longer lifespan than solar panels.

Field-Lok standing seam metal roof panels, manufactured by ATAS in Dove Grey .040 aluminum, were installed on this new library. The panels, with a 2” seam height and 15 ¼” panel width, were mechanically seamed, followed by the installation of photovoltaic panels. The 2” Field-Lok panel is a double-locked structural panel that can meet severe load requirements.

Additionally, standing seam metal panels also provide a natural platform for attaching crystalline systems without any roof penetrations, using clamps that attach to the panel seams. Highly reflective roofs with cooler rooftop temperatures result in better performance of the solar panels.

The 35,000 square foot Riverview Branch Library was designed in old Florida grandeur style by FleischmanGarcia Architecture of Tampa, Florida. It includes eight meeting rooms, along with maker space and a recording studio, with two editing suites. A covered and screened-in reading porch and outdoor garden were incorporated into the design, as well as a bookstore and vending café.

A 5,000 square foot separate children’s area allows plenty of room for kids to read and explore. The library was designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver standards. Some of the building’s features contributing toward LEED certification include the rooftop solar panel power system, an electric car charging station, native/drought-resistant landscaping, and patio furniture made from recycled plastic bottles.

Ken Zuker, senior associate with FleischmanGarcia Architecture, stated, “The county commissioner dictated a sloped roof for this building. Because it’s a county building with an expected life span of 50 to 60 years, a metal roof was the obvious choice. Since 340 solar panels were going to be installed on the roof, we chose aluminum for the metal substrate due to its longevity.”

The contractor, Alpha Roofing and Sheet Metal of Orlando, Florida, installed a total of 44,276 square feet of Field-Lok, which included some tapered panels. Tapering panels in the factory ensures quality and dimensional accuracy, as well as easier installation in the field. The metal roofing was purchased through Beacon Building Products of Orlando, Florida.
